A Guide to Feeding Your Horse

In their natural state, horses do not use energy unnecessarily. They move slowly from one feeding ground to the next. When the domestic horse expends amounts of energy it will lose condition dramatically unless fed a correct balance of forage, concentrates, vitamins and minerals to maintain peak condition.

  • Always allow access to fresh, clean water.
  • Feed concentrates (mix or cubes) on a little but often basis mixed with chaff to slow down feeding.
  • Make any changes to the diet gradually to reduce the risk of digestive trauma.
  • Delay any exercising for two to three hours after feeding.
  • Do not feed your horse for one hour following exercise.
